The Alliance is a 1970 union of two earlier (Presbyterian and Congregational) fellowships.
1875
Twenty-one Presbyterian churches from Europe and North America met in London to establish
"The Alliance of the Reformed Churches throughout the World holding the Presbyterian System".
1891
The first International Congregational Council was held in London.
1948
The Presbyterian alliance resolved to move its office from Edinburgh to Geneva, alongside the new World Council of Churches. At Wellesley, Mass. (USA), the sixth International Congregational Council adopted a constitution and set up an international office in London.
1970
In Nairobi, Kenya, the two organizations, Congregational and Presbyterian, united as the World
Alliance of Reformed Churches (Presbyterian and Congregational), with 114 member churches in 70 countries across all continents.
1982
The 21st general council, meeting in Ottawa, Canada, declared that apartheid in South Africa
was a sin, and the theological justification of apartheid was a heresy.
1989
The 22nd general council in Seoul, Korea, affirmed the commitment of the Alliance to the inclusive community of women and men in church and society.
1997
The 23rd general council in Debrecen, Hungary called for a committed process of progressive recognition, education and confession within all WARC member churches at all levels regarding economic injustice and ecological destruction.
2000
The executive committee appointed the 24rd general council to meet in Accra, Ghana, in 2004, with the theme, drawn from Jn 10.10, "That all may have life in fullness".
