As the general assembly of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches meets in Seoul, August 15-26 1989 I extend cordial greetings to you and to all delegates.

The main theme of your assembly focuses on the question which Jesus put to his disciples: "Who do you say that I am?" This is the challenging question which inspired Simon Peter's confession of faith: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Mt 16.16).

Jesus continually asks this question of his disciples in every age, and Peter's response is a witness and encouragement to us even today. All Christians are called to confess together their faith in the Lord. As we work to overcome divisions that have lasted for centuries we are sustained by our awareness of that communion, however imperfect, which exists between us through faith and through the life in the Spirit which we share through baptism.

"The World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the pontifical council for promoting Christian unity have now co-sponsored two phases of dialogue. With humble trust we must continue along the path. Dedication to the full truth of Christ impels us to recognize the differences which separate us in faith. But that same fidelity to Christ urges us to search for and acknowledge the truths and values which we have in common. In this way we foster growth in mutual understanding and strive to resolve our differences in fulfilment of Christ's prayer that we may be "consecrated in truth" (Jn 17.19), and "may all be one", so that "the world may believe" (ibid v.21).

With these sentiments I invoke God's blessing upon your assembly and I assure you of my personal esteem and friendship. "The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you" (1 Cor 16.23).

From the Vatican, August 1 1989
Johannes Paulus II
