Resolution on Lesotho |

The WARC general council 1. takes cognizance of the very serious oppressive political situation which has developed and which persists in Lesotho at this time. In this situation, where many persons have been forced to flee the country, where some have disappeared mysteriously, and where others have been brutally murdered, the victims have been mainly persons of the Lesotho Evangelical Church, a member church of the Alliance. 2. condemns the continued harassment of persons in Lesotho and urges the prime minister, Leabua Jonathan, and his government to release all political detainees, to reinstate the constitution and to allow free elections to take place for a democratically chosen government. 3. expresses to the Lesotho Evangelical Church its solidarity in these difficult times when its life and witness are being sorely tested, and assures the church and its members of its prayers and support. It further expresses its sympathy to those persons who have suffered the loss of loved ones.
