International congress, Zürich, August 25-29 2004

The Swiss reformer Heinrich Bullinger (1504-75) was led by the preaching of Huldreich Zwingli, and by study of the Bible and the Fathers, Luther and Melanchthon, to espouse the Reformation. In 1529, he became pastor of Bremgarten, and on Zwingli's death in 1531 succeeded him as chief pastor of Zürich.

Heinrich Bullinger, say the organizers of this international congress, is an outstanding example of posthumous neglect by historical scholarship.

Among the specialists, it is recognized that we have him chiefly to thank for the consolidation of the Zurich Reformation, and indeed the whole Swiss Reformation, and that he was an important teacher and adviser for all the Reformed churches of Europe.

Nevertheless he has been to a large extent relegated to a subordinate role, not least in university curricula and in current textbooks. The 500th anniversary of his birth (July 18 2004) offers an opportunity for a renewed scholarly encounter with Heinrich Bullinger and to broaden discussion on his thought and influence.

    Papers are invited

It will be possible to present short papers (15 minutes, with 15 minutes discussion) in English, French or German. The preparatory committee will decide what to include in the proposed publication of the proceedings. There will also be some provision for grants towards costs of travel and accommodation.

Offers of papers can be made up to November 1 2003, to the International Bullinger Congress, Institut für Schweizerische Reformationsgeschichte, University of Zürich, Kirchgasse 9, CH-8001 Zürich.

For further information, email the organizers.
