Update 8/3 (October 1998)
In June 1998, the third meeting of the administrative committee of the northeast Asia area of the Alliance was held in Taipei (Taiwan), together with a theological consultation on "economic crisis in northeast Asia and the responsibility of the church". Papers were presented by a Korean economist and two responders from Japan and Taiwan.
The committee recommended that, in the light of the urgency of the issues raised in the consultation, member churches should:
- initiate dialogue among economists, parish ministers and theologians;
- launch study groups to investigate the merits and demerits of the market economy system;
- affirm the importance of democracy as a pre-condition for economic justice;
- monitor whether international financial organizations (such as the IMF) act responsibly and take careful consideration of local cultures and economies;
- act as a watchdog against political corruption;
- acknowledge the importance of local cohesiveness in the face of the dominating and disintegrating tendencies of globalization;
- take a leading role in safeguarding the environment and in protecting migrant workers, both of which suffer in the process of globalization;
- educate church members as to the genuine nature and purpose of the economy, a term which springs from oikonomía, or "household"; and
- promote a cooperative rather than a competitive spirit throughout the region.
