UPDATE is published quarterly by the
World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), a fellowship of 75
million Reformed Christians in 214 churches in 107 countries. Its
member churches are Congregational, Presbyterian, Reformed, Uniting and
United
churches with roots in the 16th-century Reformation led by John Calvin,
John Knox and others. WARC has a small secretariat in Geneva,
Switzerland.

Welcome to the electronic version of Update, the quarterly newsletter of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC). It aims to quickly reach a wider audience, including youth and others not yet involved in WARC about the critical events in the life of the Reformed family worldwide. Grand Rapids destined to host the Uniting General Council
On a cold February day in 2006, eight people of faith changed the course of ecumenical history. Representatives of two worldwide Reformed organizations met in Grand Rapids in the United States to discuss a closer relationship. They came on behalf of their respective organizations, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) and the Reformed Ecumenical Council (REC). What emerged was not two related groups but a proposal for one new Christian body: the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC). a Native American minister from Grand Rapids, next June’s Uniting
General Council (UGC) will do more than launch a new ecumenical
organization. Mike Peters says it also will bring back an old teaching about a Lakota Sioux girl who was taken up to the heavens and taught a drum dance of healing between American Indians and whites. Peters hopes 1,000 dancers winding through Grand Rapids’ Ah-Nab-Awen Park will do just that for UGC native peoples and church leaders from all corners of the globe. “We’re bringing the drum back with one purpose: to signal unity to the world,” says Peters, who is helping plan the event. “It could be the start of a spiritual awakening.” Full
storyGlobal Institute of Theology offered in 2010 by Douwe Visser Theology students with an interest in ecumenism and mission are being offered the opportunity to combine classroom study with participation in an historic global ecumenical assembly. The Global Institute of Theology (GIT), organised by the Office for Theology and Ecumenical Engagement of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), is scheduled to be held on two sites in the United States in June 2010. Students will meet in Chicago from 04 to 17 June and then move to the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids for 17 to 26 June. While in Grand Rapids, they will witness the historic merger of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) and the Reformed Ecumenical Council (REC) to form a new body, the World Communion of Reformed Churches, during the Uniting General Council.
