Cape Town, August 28 2001

The joint commission appointed by the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity held its annual session at Zikomo Mission Flats, Strand, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, from August 22 to 28 2001.

This was the fourth session in the third round of this international bilateral dialogue.

The report of the first round, 1970-1977, was entitled The Presence of Christ in Church and World, and that of the second, 1984-1989, Towards a Common Understanding of the Church.

The present third round, building on the results of the two previous phases, has as its general theme "Church as Community of Common Witness to the Kingdom of God".

Two presentations by Prof. Dirk J Smit (Reformed, Cape Town, South Africa) and Rev. Stuart C Bate OMI (Roman Catholic, Hilton, South Africa) connected this theme with the South African context.

Dr Donna Geernaert SC (Roman Catholic, Ottawa, Canada) gave a paper on "The theme of "Kingdom of God' in Ecumenical Dialogue" and Fr John Fuellenbach SVD (Roman Catholic, Germany/Italy) presented a reflection on "The Kingdom of God as Principle of Action on Behalf of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation". These were followed by responses from Dr Huang Po Ho (Reformed, Taiwan) and Dr Odair Pedroso Mateus (Reformed, Brazil/Switzerland).

The co-chairs of the dialogue are Most Rev. Anthony J Farquhar, Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor, Ireland (Roman Catholic) and Rev. Prof. H Russel Botman, the University of Stellenbosch, Republic of South Africa (Reformed).

Other Roman Catholic participants included: Revd Dr Henry O'Brien (Scotland), Reverend William Henn OFM Cap (USA/Italy), Reverend Benedict T Viviano OP (USA/Switzerland) and Dom Michel Van Parys OSB (Belgium).

Other Reformed participants were: Prof. Alasdair IC Heron (Scotland/Germany), Revd Maria Luiza Rückert (Brazil), Prof. Heidi Hadsell (USA), Prof. Leo Koffeman (Netherlands), Prof. Peter Wyatt (Canada) and Prof. Rathnakara Sadananda (India).

Monsignor Dr John Radano (Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity) and Dr Odair Pedroso Mateus (World Alliance of Reformed Churches) serve as co-secretaries of the dialogue.

The present session was hosted by the Commission for Public Witness of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Reformed Church in Africa and the Uniting Reformed Church in Western Cape. On Sunday August 26, members of the dialogue commission were welcomed in local churches for worship.

The next session of the Reformed-Roman Catholic international dialogue will take place in Northern Ireland in September 2002.
