Taipei, July 9 1999

A delegation from the executive committee of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, accompanied by representatives of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, today paid an official visit to President Lee Teng-Hui and presented him with a letter supporting the aspirations of the people of Taiwan for self-determination. The full text of the letter follows.

Your excellency,

We would like, on behalf of the executive committee of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (Warc), to convey to you our heartfelt thanks for receiving us despite your very busy schedule.

At the invitation of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, the executive committee of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches is holding its annual meeting in Tamsui (1-10 July 1999). The World Alliance of Reformed Churches is a fellowship of 75 million Christians who belong to 214 Reformed, Presbyterian and Congregational member churches in 105 countries.

For the participants, it is a precious opportunity to be acquainted with the life and culture of the people of Taiwan and especially with the witness of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. On Sunday July 4 we were invited to many congregations. We were received very warmly. The experience of gracious hospitality and wonderful worship will be a lasting and grateful memory.

We realize that under your leadership the road towards democratization has been opened in Taiwan. We are sure that this direction will be continued and deepened. The Alliance has been always committed to the issue of Christian unity but also to the cause of human rights, peace and economic justice.

As a faithful member of the Alliance, the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan continues to witness for freedom, democracy and human rights in Taiwan. This is an inspiration for many Christians around the world. The Alliance issued statements in 1991, 1994 and 1997 supporting the aspirations of the people of Taiwan for self-determination. The Alliance will continue to be in solidarity with the people of Taiwan in their effort towards their historical destiny. In this way we seek together the renewal of people's spirituality for a deeper meaning of life and the greater well-being of society.

We salute you as a member of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and a fellow Presbyterian. We wish you strength, wisdom and endurance in your heavy duties.

With best wishes,
Respectfully yours,

Dr CS Song, president;
Dr Milan Opocensky, general secretary
