Our hostsThe Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana will host the general council. The council will take place at the University of Ghana in Legon, a suburb of Accra. Daily worship will be celebrated on an open field in the center of campus, with a resident youth choir leading us in song and praise. Plenary sessions will be held in a large cafeteria just across from the worship field. We will be housed in the student dormitories. Participants will be officially welcomed by a gathering of thousands at the national conference centre. Drums and song will call the council to order, opening with worship and followed by a multi-media keynote event. On the first Sunday of the meeting, tens of thousands of Presbyterians from all over Ghana will gather for worship with the general council in the national stadium at Black Star Square, overlooking the sea. During the first week of the general council, participants will embark on a daylong liturgical journey to the dungeons of the Elmina and Cape Coast fortresses from which countless Africans were sent into slavery. During the second weekend, participants are invited to visit families and parishes in every region of the country as well as Togo and Burkina Faso, sharing the warmth of west African hospitality and witness of our host congregations. Many local Presbyterians will join the council as visitors, helping participants to understand the life and witness of the local churches. Throughout the general council, participants will experience the richness of Ghanaian culture through song, dance, drama and art. The 19-member national organizing committee chaired by Rev. Dr JOY Mante, dean of Trinity theological seminary, spearheads local preparations. The churchesThe Reformed churches in Ghana are widely known for their education and health care ministries. Renewing the church in the context of charismatic revival is a challenge they all face. Celebration is at the heart of Ghanaian worship and services overflow with prayer, song and dance. Preaching is inspired and engaging. Most congregations have at least four choirs and bands! The churches trace their origins to the 19th century activities of the Basel and Bremen missions that were later strengthened by missionaries from Scotland.
